Fine Gael Senator for Wexford Michael D’Arcy has expressed delight at the number of Sports Capital Grants for Wexford announced by the Minister of State for Sport, Michael Ring, late last night.
“Due to our current economic situation, we are unsure of the immediate future of grants of any description. While the amount of funding available for this round may not match the amounts available in the years of the Celtic Tiger, when taken in conjunction with County Council funding, they will allow real improvements to be made to local sporting facilities.”
Almost €32,000 will go for outdoor gym equipment at the urban park on the Avenue, Gorey and a further €22,000 for equipment storage at New Ross town park.
“In these straightened times, when private clubs and sporting facilities are less affordable, the facilities provided by the County Council are all the more important and welcome. The recently published frightening statistics, particularly about childhood and adolescent obesity, also highlight the importance of sport and exercise opportunities. This is a good news story for sport in Wexford.”
